Man Drowns at Elk River Falls

Avery County officials are investigating a drowning that happened at Elk River Falls on Sunday, May 20th. Emergency services began a search for a man in his 20s from Ohio, who was visiting for a wedding. He apparently went under while wading at the bottom of the falls. His name has not yet been released. Yancey County Ranked 8th in Education According to State-Wide Assessment

Yancey County Schools Principal Reassignments

At the regular Yancey County Board of Education Meeting for May, the Board took action to reassign Andrea Allen, current principal of Bee Log Elementary School, to Bald Creek Elementary School as principal for the 2018-19 school year. TRAC Hires New Executive Director

After 30 years of serving the Toe River Arts Council as Director, Denise Cook will be turning over the reins of the organization to Nealy Andrews. Cook took over the position from founding director Susan Larson, who served from 1976 until 1987. The TRAC board spent six months in their search. Missing Woman Drowned in McDowell County

According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department the body of a woman found floating in Paxton Creek Monday afternoon, May 14,  has been positively identified as Brittney Crystal Bumgardner, age 31 of Marion. Bumgardner was reported missing on May 10th by family members.   An autopsy performed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Wednesday morning, confirmed the identity through dental records.  It was also determined that Bumgardner drowned. There were no signs of physical injury, and no foul play is suspected at this time. Kayakers found the body Monday in Paxton Creek behind Woody Farm Drive.
