Forest Service Conducting Two Planned Burns This Week

The U.S. Forest Service is conducting two prescribed burns this week on the Grandfather Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest, pending weather conditions. The Roses Mountain burn will cause The Mountains to Sea Trail from Table Rock Road to Steels Creek Road to be closed through Friday. Three Dead in Murder-Suicide in McDowell County

Three people were found dead around 6:30 Wednesday morning, April 11th,  in the North Cove section of McDowell County in an apparent murder-suicide. The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as 39-year-old Kacey Case Haney, 49-year-old Christopher Scott Childres, and 48-year-old Jeffrey Dale Haney. Johnson Sentenced As Habitual Felon

On April 4th, 2018, Monuel Nicodemus Johnson, 40 years old, was convicted of felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, six counts of felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle, and two counts of felony breaking or entering.  All of these convictions stemmed from a series of thefts from homes and vehicles in January of 2017 across Avery, Mitchell, and ...(more)

Mitchell County Power Outage

It was a cold dark night for a large area of Mitchell County last night.  Around 4:30pm yesterday afternoon trees fell on power lines and took down poles and damaged other equipment causing a power outage for around 2,200 Duke Energy Customers.
