Authorities are warning local residents to be wary of scams prompting them to send money or buy gift cards. Prescription Drug Use Still High in Mitchell County

A newly revealed Drug Enforcement Administration database confirms rural counties were hit hardest by the opioid epidemic in North Carolina. The database, published by the Washington Post, tracked every pain pill sold in the United States from 2006-12, during which more than 2.5 billion prescription pain pills were sold in North Carolina. New Art Project Going Up In Burnsville

Installation was completed this week of the first of three artistic telescopes on the west end of Burnsville. The first scope is 21 feet with metal cages of aluminum LED lighting and 2800 blown glass orbs. This is the smallest of the three. The colors represent the Appalachian sunset over the mountains. Bills Authorizing New State Park and Trails

Governor Roy Cooper signed bills into law this month authorizing a new state park and three new state trails.
