Before enrolling in preschool or kindergarten in Yancey County for the 2020-2021 school year, stop by the Burnsville Town Center for the Kindergarten Kickoff Celebration Thursday, April 2nd from 12:00 – 3:00 pm. Activities will include: school bus tours, bus safety tips with Buster the Bus; face painting; learning centers; games; art and music activities; fingerprinting by the Burnsville Police Department and much, much more!
Parents, this is also a great time to learn about preschool! Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about subsidy vouchers, preschool-related programs and the NC Pre-K Program, which allows eligible four-year-old children to attend preschool tuition-free. If you are interested in registering your child to attend Blue Ridge Elementary Preschool, Burnsville Elementary Preschool or Mountain Heritage Preschool for the 2020-2021 school year, you can complete applications at the Town Center. Parents interested in applying for the NC Pre-K Program are encouraged to bring your child’s birth certificate and income verification (such as W-2 or one month’s payroll check stub). Staff will be on hand to answer questions and assist with filling out the applications.
Registration will follow at each school in the county from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
Parents registering their child for Kindergarten will need to visit the elementary school in the district in which they live to complete the registration process.
Any child entering Kindergarten during the 2020-21 school year must be five (5) years of age on or before August 31, 2020.
Parents/guardians must bring the following documents to register their child for kindergarten:
- Child’s birth certificate (certified copy preferred; mother’s copy acceptable)
- Child’s Social Security number and Medicaid ID number (if applicable)
- Student residence verification (two items of verification – see below)
- NC Kindergarten Health Assessment Report along with the immunization record signed by doctor/certified nurse practitioner.
