Hurricane Helene recovery, opioid response, and ongoing FEMA projects dominated discussion at the August 11th meeting of the Yancey County Board of Commissioners.

Cooperative Extension Director David Davis delivered what commissioners called a “powerful” update on agricultural recovery efforts. Since the storm, more than 13,000 bales of hay and straw have been distributed to local farms. Davis said farmers have also received $8,500 in gift cards, fencing materials, and feed, and a drone-assisted pasture restoration program is underway across 182 acres. Outstanding service in the recovery effort was recognized during his presentation.

In other business, commissioners approved six proposals for funding through the county’s opioid settlement funds. The allocations will support prevention, recovery, and youth-focused programs aimed at reducing substance abuse and helping residents access treatment.

County Manager updates on FEMA-related projects included ongoing water and sewer improvements, work at Ray-Court Park, and continued planning for restoration of Cane River Park and the county campground.

During public comment, several residents from Pensacola and Cattail voiced frustration over delays in debris removal, urging the county to speed up clean-up efforts in hard-hit communities.
