Betty Sue Getz, age 82, of the Blue Rock Community, went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 14th, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ransom and Jewel McKinney. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her loving husband of 22 years, Larry Getz; and a sister, Lois O’Dear.
Betty was a kind and gentle soul whose heart was never too full to make room for one more person to care about. A lifelong and faithful member of Blue Rock Baptist Church, she was a firm believer in serving the Lord and helping others, and lived that belief daily. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, visited residents in the rest homes, and was always willing to help anyone in need. Betty loved traveling, especially the wide-open spaces of Montana and Wyoming which were here favorites, and she made a lot of memories exploring new places over the years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend to so many that her life centered around.
Family meant everything to Betty, and she leaves behind her beloved son, Joe Harris, and wife, Brenda of Burnsville; her treasured grandson, Benjamin Harris of Burnsville; four brothers: Tommy McKinney (Janice), Sherril McKinney (Wanda), Ronnie McKinney (Carol), and Arthur McKinney (Penny), all of Burnsville; two sisters: Elaine Canipe (Ted) of Burnsville and Trina Smith (Jim) of Greenville, SC; and her special friend and traveling companion who shared many adventures by her side, Nellie Putman.
She will be missed more than words can say, but the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all the lives she touched along the way.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 20th at Blue Rock Baptist Church. Rev. Kenneth Forbes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Blue Rock Baptist Church Old Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Compassionate Care WNC at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
