Darryl Wayne Whitson, age 84, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Saturday February the 28, at Mission Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jack and Esther Miller Whitson. He was also preceded in death by a nephew: Christopher Whitson.
He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church in Burnsville, where he was actively involved in worship and generously gave his time helping with church activities. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he lived it daily through quiet service, kindness, and a willing heart. Whether assisting with church projects or participating in services, he found great joy in serving his church family.
Above all else, he loved his family. He treasured every moment spent with them whether camping, hiking mountain trails, or simply enjoying time together outdoors. Nature was his happy place. He felt closest to God surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and woods he loved so much.
One of his favorite pastimes was chopping firewood. He took pride in always staying two years ahead, making sure there was plenty stacked and ready. It was more than preparation; it was a labor of love and a reflection of his hardworking, thoughtful nature. He also loved building things out of wood. Creative and skilled with his hands, he could turn simple materials into something meaningful and lasting.
He was the kind of man everyone enjoyed being around. Steady, dependable, and warm-hearted, he made others feel welcome and valued. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those who knew him. He worked faithfully at OMC until it closed and later retired from Hickory Springs, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and dedication.
His life was a testament to faith, family, hard work, and love for the outdoors. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the memories he created, the faith he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Lorraine Mary Whitson; daughters: Julie Robinson (Rick) of Hickory NC, and Malinda Silver (Dennis) of Burnsville NC; a son: Daniel Whitson (Michelle) of Forest City NC; brother, Don Whitson; grandchildren: Amanda Farris (Jonah), Casey Robinson (Ben Parham), Erin Robinson, Danielle Deese (Nathan), Holland Crain (Avery), Autumn Silver, Sawyer Croix Silver; and one great-granddaughter, Casmiria Deese.
A celebration to honor Darryl’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burnsville, NC, at the following address: 20 Summit Street, Burnsville, NC 28714.
