Blue Ridge Regional Hospital (BRRH) has announced Wendy Allen, RN, a dedicated nurse in the hospital’s Infusion Department, as its latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award recognizes the exceptional, compassionate care that nurses provide to patients and families every day.
Allen was nominated by the family member of a recurring patient who underwent a severe, months-long health decline. In the nomination, the family highlighted Allen’s profound impact, noting she consistently goes above and beyond, greeting patients at the door, carefully assisting them from their wheelchairs, and wrapping them in warm blankets. Beyond her clinical excellence during treatment sessions, Allen regularly reached out to check on the patient while they were recovering at home.
“She is such a delightful nurse with a true light of love for her job that shines bright,” the family member shared in the nomination.
Dr. Tonia W. Hale, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Officer of BRRH, expressed immense pride in Allen’s dedication to her patients.
“Wendy perfectly exemplifies the core mission of nursing—providing world-class clinical care wrapped in deep, genuine empathy,” said Dr. Hale. “Our infusion patients are often navigating incredibly challenging health journeys, and having a nurse like Wendy who treats them like family makes all the difference. Her proactive outreach to check on patients outside of hospital hours shows a level of commitment and a heart of gold that truly elevates our entire facility. We are incredibly proud to honor her with the DAISY Award.”
The DAISY Award is an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
