A multi-county car chase across western North Carolina ended Monday after authorities used stop sticks, causing the suspect’s vehicle to overturn in Avery County.
According to the Avery County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was airlifted to Mission Hospital and later taken into custody after barricading inside the vehicle.
Authorities say the chase began shortly after 10:30 a.m. in the Leicester community during a Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office investigation. Detectives encountered Mitchell Monroe Gunter, who had an outstanding warrant.
While attempting to flee, Gunter struck a detective with his vehicle, dragging him before leaving the scene. The officer was treated at Mission Hospital and later released.
Officials say Gunter was involved in a crash at Old Leicester Highway and Mount Carmel Road, then stole a propane company truck and later another vehicle before leading deputies on a pursuit through Yancey, Mitchell and Avery counties.
The chase ended when stop sticks were deployed, causing the vehicle to crash and flip.
Gunter remains hospitalized and in custody. He faces multiple charges, including assault on a law enforcement officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
