The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is partnering with the National Forest Foundation to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch, which provides access to the Nolichucky River. The launch, located on the Pisgah National Forest, was damaged by Hurricane Helene. “We are excited to begin work to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch, a cherished spot on our forest where folks can recreate and enjoy the outdoors,” said Appalachian District Ranger Jennifer Barnhart. “These improvements will enhance safety and accessibility for local residents, visitors and the outfitting community, ensuring the Nolichucky River remains a treasured resource for outdoor recreationists in the years to come.”

New renderings describe the vision for the project, which will improve flood resiliency and restore recreational access to the Nolichucky River. Construction is expected to begin this month, and the site is anticipated to open later in the spring 2026.

The Poplar Boat Launch area has been temporarily reopened for day use only until reconstruction on the boat launch begins within the next months. The site is currently completely unimproved with no services available. Parking is available on the gravel surfaces only. For your safety, do not block the road or railroad tracks.

The public should use extra caution when spending time in this area as hazards may exist on Forest Service lands and in the Nolichucky River. Once complete, the upgraded site will include amenities such as a double vault restroom, a picnic pavilion with electrical access, reconfigured parking for vehicles and trailers and a dedicated small watercraft ramp and access trail. Features such as native plants, improved storm water retention and permanent erosion control measures will add to the area’s overall resiliency to flooding.
