Four Western North Carolina sheriffs recently served as guardians on the Blue Ridge Honor Flight, helping honor military veterans during a trip to Washington, D.C.

Among those taking part were Sheriffs Bill Wilkie of Haywood County, Brent Holbrooks of Macon County, Chuck Owenby of Transylvania County, and Shane Hilliard of Yancey County. Each was paired with a veteran to assist throughout the journey.

Officials say one of the most moving moments came when a 99-year-old World War II veteran joined the trip. Sheriff Hilliard called it an honor to serve one of the nation’s heroes and said the experience was a reminder of the sacrifices made for America’s freedoms.
