Avery County officials are asking for the public’s help as firefighters continue battling a large brush fire near 1688 Banner Elk Highway, also known as NC 194, close to Horney Creek Road.
The fire has already burned more than 120 acres and is only about 50 percent contained. Multiple fire departments were on the scene, late yesterday, working through steep terrain and heavy smoke.
As a result, NC 194 was completely shut down between Sam Eller Road and Edgar Tufts Road. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
Authorities thank the public for their cooperation and remind everyone to steer clear of the area until the fire is fully under control.
