Voters went to the polls yesterday for the North Carolina primary election, with several local races appearing on the ballot.
Election officials say results remain unofficial until they are certified following the counting of absentee and provisional ballots. Final certification typically occurs several days after election day once all ballots are verified.
In the Mitchell County Commissioners Race voters were selecting 3 out of the 6 candidates running. Steve Pitman was the top vote getter with 2,171 votes, Harley Masters received 2,041 and the third highest was Vic Burleson with 1,980 votes. Donald Street was close behind with 1,957 votes. Jeff Harding received 1,790 and Becky Grant 652 Votes.
In the Mitchell County Clerk of Superior Court Race, Shane Buchanan won over David Wheeler with 3,605 votes to 638.
In the Mitchell County Sheriff’s race Shana Vance received just over 51% of the vote with 2,256 votes. Cecil Hobson had 2,123 votes.
In the Yancey County Commissioners race the 3 incumbents on the ballot were the top vote getters. David Grindstaff had 1,281 votes, Stacey Green, 1,164 votes, Sandi Norton 1,089. Randy Buckner was close behind with 1,020 votes and Jason Silvers received 630 votes.
Also, in the vote yesterday, Chuck Edwards received around 70% of the Republican vote in the House of Representatives District 11 race. Jamie Ager dominated the Democrat vote with over 66% of the votes.
