Longtime community leader and Mayland Community College Trustee Keith Holtsclaw was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during the May 18, 2026 meeting of the College’s Board of Trustees.

The award, considered North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, was presented by Ralph Hise in recognition of Holtsclaw’s decades of service, leadership, and commitment to Mitchell County and communities across Western North Carolina.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is one of the most prestigious honors granted by the Governor of North Carolina and is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service and made significant contributions to their communities and the state.

During the ceremony, Senator Hise reflected on Holtsclaw’s longstanding dedication to public service and the many leadership roles he has filled throughout his career, including serving as Mitchell County Manager, leading the local hospital during a critical period, and serving on numerous local and regional boards and organizations.

“He keeps saying he is retiring, and we keep finding jobs and roles for him to fill,” Hise shared during the presentation. “He has been a close personal friend to me and my family over the years, and I just wanted to say thank you.”

Several community leaders and longtime colleagues also offered remarks recognizing Holtsclaw’s impact on the region.

Bill Slagle, Executive Director of the Mitchell County Economic Development Commission, spoke about a friendship and working relationship spanning more than 40 years.

“One of the best friends I ever had,” Slagle said. “No one deserves this honor more than you do. From the bottom of my heart and my family, thank you for everything you have done.”

Mitchell County Commissioner Jeff Harding highlighted Holtsclaw’s leadership during difficult times for the community hospital and his continued advocacy for Mitchell County.

“You came when the hospital was struggling badly and turned that around,” Harding said. “Your heart, your efforts, and your work have been totally dedicated to Mitchell County.”

Former Mayland Community College President and CEO of the Mayland Enterprise Corporation Dr. John Boyd also recognized Holtsclaw’s years of service and friendship.

“The community is better off because of your involvement,” Boyd said. “You have made a difference.”

Additional remarks were shared by Aron Gabriel, Mayland Community College Trustee Van Phillips, and Trey Oakley of the Williams YMCA of Avery County, who described Holtsclaw as a mentor and supporter whose leadership helped make the YMCA project possible.

Mayland Community College leaders expressed appreciation for Holtsclaw’s continued service to the College and the region.

“Mr. Holtsclaw’s lifelong dedication to serving others and strengthening his community has positively impacted countless individuals across our region,” College leadership shared during the meeting. “We are grateful for his service to Mayland Community College and congratulate him on this distinguished and well-deserved honor.”
