High Peaks Leads Grandfather Mountain Hikes

August 11, 2018 @ 8:30 am

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association as it leads two hikes Saturday, August 11 at one of the state’s premiere natural attractions, Grandfather Mountain.

The less-strenuous hike will begin at the Stack Rock parking area and proceed to the Linn Cove Viaduct Parking area, with a further out-and-back excursion under the viaduct. Total distance is 2.5 miles with little elevation change. This is a very scenic hike which goes by Stack Rock (Grandfather Mountain’s version of Chimney Rock) and crosses Stack Rock Creek on a remarkable bridge.

The long hike starts at the Viaduct Parking area and goes to the Asuti Trail Trailhead on US 221.  Total distance is approximately 5 miles with little elevation change.

Hikers should meet at the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m.  Shuttle service will be provided by Yancey Transportation for a $5.00 donation. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike but not on the vans, so if you want to bring your pet you must provide your own transportation.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch, foul weather gear and hiking poles if you use them.

The group should return to Burnsville by 4 p.m. For questions or to reserve a van seat, contact hike leader Robert Branch by e-mail (rbranch18@aol.com) or phone at 828-682-3102 by August 9th.

As always, please check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
