It was a cold dark night for a large area of Mitchell County last night. Around 4:30pm yesterday afternoon trees fell on power lines and took down poles and damaged other equipment causing a power outage for around 2,200 Duke Energy Customers.
The lights went out in a broad area from Spruce Pine to Grassy Creek, Little Switzerland and up to Plum Tree and Roaring Creek and even into Avery County.
Another Spring Time winter blast with temperatures below freezing overnight made for a cold night for many in Mitchell County.
Crews have worked through the night and hope to have power completely restored before 9am this morning.
