Evelyn Pendley Hughes

Evelyn Pendley Hughes, age 91, of Rhododendron Avenue in Spruce Pine, died suddenly Thursday, May 7, 2020 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Born on August 19, 1928 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late David Lindsey Pendley, Sr. and the late Bertie Freeman Pendley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hughes who passed away in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her brothers; John M. Pendley and David L. Pendley, Jr.

Evelyn was the oldest living member of the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. She had held numerous offices at the church over the years.

She retired as the Assistant Town Clerk of the town of Spruce Pine.

She was also a charter member of the Selinda’s Thursday Beautification Club.

She enjoyed reading, needle work, sewing, working puzzles, and feeding birds and squirrels.

Left to cherish her memories are her sons; Bill Hughes and wife, Vicki of Simpsonville, SC and David Hughes and wife, Diane of Spruce Pine; her daughter; Carolyn Brunning and husband, Bob of Amherst, VA; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service and interment for the family will be on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Rick Schilling officiating.

A public memorial service will be planned and announced at a later date.
