Betty Herbst

Betty Herbst, age 88, passed away March 25, 2024.

Betty was born in her home in Spear, N.C., the daughter of Ebbie Greene Shook and Charles Shook. She was raised in North Carolina and met her husband, Frederick Herbst, when her brother brought him home for a weekend furlough from the Navy.

Fred and Betty married on Feb. 13, 1954. They were married for 60 years. They raised their family in Vienna, N.Y., where Betty was a homemaker and caretaker of many children throughout the years. Any child who came into the house became one of her own. Betty and Fred were most proud of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They both worked very hard to provide for their five children and there was always an extra place set at the table for their friends and neighborhood kids. Betty and Fred attended every event possible in their children and grandchildren’s lives, often driving hours to watch a ball game, a soccer match, a concert or a school event.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in 2014. She leaves behind her children: Fred and Rita Herbst, Mary and Patrick Lappin, Pam and Steve Arzberger, Stephen and Wendy Herbst and Tom Herbst; her 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sisters Barbara Buchanan, Florence Dellinger, Alice Stamey and Frances Shook, her brother-in-law John Herbst, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge her loving caretaker for many years, Martha Blanton, who became family. Betty was predeceased by her sister Mary Sue Shook and brothers Joe Shook, Rob Shook, Jack Shook, Harry Shook, Carroll Stamey, Harold Dellinger and Jason Buchanan.

A Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Ticonderoga, N.Y., Tuesday, April 2, 2024 with Father Christopher Looby officiating. Burial will take place at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, in Spear, N.C.

Betty’s family invites friends to join them at 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall of Yellow Mountain Church on Friday, April 5th to visit and share memories of Betty.

The family would like to thank the staff of Elderwood in Ticonderoga for their loving care with Betty. She felt very loved there and was extremely well cared for. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Betty’s memory be made to the Elderwood of Ticonderoga Activities Department, 101 Adirondack Dr. Suite 3, Ticonderoga, N.Y., 12883 or Avery County Meals on Wheels Senior Services, P.O.
