Locust Cove Wildfire Contained

The North Carolina Forest Service reported yesterday that the Locust Cove wildfire in Marion, which started Thursday evening, is now 100% contained.

Officials said the fire, in a rural area of McDowell County, burned 92 acres.

It was up to 40 acres Friday, but the rain Friday helped crews battle the fire, as the precipitation greatly lessened the amount of smoke as they continued efforts to create containment lines.

The U.S. Forest Service said Rough terrain and thick vegetation made getting those containment lines in place more difficult.

The fire was around 90 acres Saturday night and 85% contained. Officials reported full containment just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The wildfire was initially reported shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2023. Forest Service officials say they are still not sure what started the fire.
