Some Yancey 911 Calls being Routed out of State

Yancey County emergency services officials said some 911 calls are not going directly to the county’s call center. Emergency Services Director Jeff Howell said they first learned about this issue when they got a call from a 911 center in Utah.

Howell said this affects Country Cablevision customers who use VOIP, or calls over the Internet. He said in those cases, calls could go to Utah before being routed back to Yancey County. Howell said it’s out of the county’s control and that the county is working with Country Cablevision and the 911 center in Utah.

He said the cable company told him this is an issue with a third party vendor they use and they are still working to fix it. Those using wifi calling through Country Cable are being asked to call 678-9463 instead of 911 in an emergency

Howell also said if possible, people should use their cell phones to call 911 instead of VOIP.
