Independent Monitor’s Community Meeting About Mission/HCA

Tuesday evening, February 27th is the first of the public meetings hosted by the Independent Monitor for Mission Health System in our area. This meeting, related to Mission Hospital-McDowell is at 5:30 at the Marion Community Building. Wednesday evening, February 28th the meeting relating to Blue Ridge Regional Hospital is at 5:30 at the Yancey Library. These follow the initial four meetings held in Transylvania County, Buncombe County, Macon County, and Jackson County.  The meetings are open to all members of the public.

Gibbins Advisors is the Independent Monitor hired to monitor HCA Healthcare’s compliance with the obligations HCA agreed to when it purchased Mission Health System in early 2019. In each meeting, the Gibbins team will discuss its role, provide an update on HCA’s 15 commitments, and provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and make comments.

Mission/HCA in Asheville has come under increasing scrutiny since several lawsuits have been filed alleging they have failed to meet requirements of the purchase agreement. A report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services made public February 15th found violations that posed “immediate jeopardy” to patients’ health and safety.
