Avery County Wins State Title

Avery County won their first team state sports title Saturday’s in the NCHSAA 1A dual team wrestling state title match. The Vikings defeated Uwharrie Charter 35-30 to win the state championship and finish up a great season. But it all came down to the heavyweight division after Uwharrie cut the lead to 32-30. Tyler McKinney Signs with Gardner-Webb

Mitchell Mountaineer, wide receiver, Tyler McKinney has committed to play football at Gardner-Webb University. McKinney was an All-WNC second team selection in 2019 and finished with 764 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. ...(more)

Cole Shehan Signs with Wingate College

On Wednesday Feburary 5th Cole Shehan from Mountain Heritage signed to play football with Wingate College. Cole had 653 rushing yards and five touchdowns this past season. Hannah Tipton Joins 1000 point Club

With a 60 to 49 team win over Mitchell on Friday night,  Hannah Tipton scored her 1000 point.  Hannah needed 11 more points going into the game and scored 18 for the night. Several players from the Western Highland Conference have been named as a part of the All Western North Carolina Football Teams. Noah Pitman, Mitchell, Sr. – Offensive Player of the Year Pitman led his team to the 1AA West region final and put up video game numbers during his senior season. High Peaks Leads Mt. Mitchell Ramble Sept. 28

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a ramble around the tallest mountain in the Eastern U.S. as the club leads an early-fall excursion on Mt. Mitchell. Roark, Smith take ‘Outstanding Track & Field Athlete’ honors at Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

Austin Roark of Johnson City, Tenn., and Shannon Smith, Norcross, Ga., were named the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games’ Outstanding Men’s and Women’s Athletes of the Games.
