The Town of Spruce Pine has adopted a new program that will help them to collect unpaid tax and utility bills. The Local Government Debt Setoff program is through the NC Department of Revenue. The program requires the town to input a valid customer social security number, name and a past due amount greater than $50 that has been billed within the past few years. The NC Board of Transportation has approved the naming of a section of Hwy 19E in honor of the late Sheriff Donald Banks. The section to be renamed is on Hwy 19 between Cane River School Road and the West Yancey Fire Department. It will be named Sheriff Donald Banks Highway. At the Yancey County Commissioners monthly meeting on Monday evening, December 9th the first business that had to be taken care of was for nominations for a new chairman of the board.
