The Avery County Airport will use $3 million in state and federal funds to make infrastructure improvements to the airport. The project is expected to be worked on in several phases and to be complete in late 2020 or early 2021. The Town of Spruce Pine has adopted a new program that will help them to collect unpaid tax and utility bills. The Local Government Debt Setoff program is through the NC Department of Revenue. The program requires the town to input a valid customer social security number, name and a past due amount greater than $50 that has been billed within the past few years. The NC Board of Transportation has approved the naming of a section of Hwy 19E in honor of the late Sheriff Donald Banks. The section to be renamed is on Hwy 19 between Cane River School Road and the West Yancey Fire Department. It will be named Sheriff Donald Banks Highway.
